JML contributor Jessica Murphy Moo is the editor of Portland Magazine and the director of storytelling at the University of Portland. She’s also an accomplished librettist — which means she writes the words that are sung in operas.
Her third opera, “Loving v. Virginia,” about the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized interracial marriage in the United States, is about to debut with the Virginia Opera Company. Join Jessica in conversation with JML coordinator Mike Jordan Laskey as they discuss Jessica’s new work; how she approaches the creative challenge of writing a libretto; and how she got into this form of creativity without a formal musical background.
