The Christian journey offers us a confluence of opportunities to personally explore the realities of death, loss and grief in the life of Jesus and their resonance within our own unique journeys. Moreover, we are led to a deeper experience of faithful witness as we contemplate these personal parallels and receive the healing God intends for humanity. And, we can envision the wholeness that is possible for each one of us by cultivating personal meaning within an era of significant change, amidst life transitions and while navigating myriad losses. This rings especially true in the current state of strife and suffering that encapsulates our country and world.
The common denominator in all of this is the gift of imagination that we are endowed with because we are made in the image and likeness of God. Prayerfully engaging this gift can support and inspire us within grief’s landscape of vulnerability as it moves us toward deep reflection, generativity and integration.
Join us for this multi-part series in which we will explore the wild, creative edge of grief in our lives while experiencing community and the power of harnessing our imagination for healing and transformation.
First Session
This session will invite participants to become present to instances in the Gospels where Jesus and others experience the touchstones of death, grief and loss, while incorporating Ignatian prayer practices that tap into the imagination. Participants will be encouraged to engage with the diverse emotions that accompany such experiences and honor them within a safe space of community and solidarity.
Second Session
This session will include multiple opportunities to experience this wild, creative edge in the diverse expressions of grief in our world. In our time together, we will briefly examine art, music, sacred texts and other modalities with the intention of noticing and exploring the connections between grieving and creating. Participants will be invited to share/describe a work (text, piece of art, etc.) that embodies this connection for them.
Third Session
This session will allow participants to creatively express their own reckoning with death, grief and loss as they have experienced it personally and flowing from the previous two sessions, in which the Ignatian imagination and its grace-filled practices will have been incorporated. Participants will be asked to create and share something for this final gathering that affirms their respective journeys and welcomes their healing.
