Nicholas Kerestan Leeper, SJ, is a Jesuit scholastic, teacher and contemporary iconographer who creates Pop Icons, a body of work that blends traditional religious symbolism with contemporary visual culture. His work explores how the transcendent is made present through what Pseudo-Dionysius calls “dissimilar similarities,” or “dissemblance,” where symbols point toward the ineffable by means of analogy and paradox rather than direct representation. Leeper holds a master’s in philosophy from Saint Louis University. He has had works displayed at a variety of venues, including bodegas, halfway homes, donut shops and conventional art galleries. His work is in a variety of private collections in the United States. Leeper currently lives and works in New York City.
